USCIS Announces New USCIS Form to Obtain an EAD and Social Security Number Simultaneously

On October 2, 2017, USCIS announced that due to a new relationship with the Social Security Administration, foreign nationals under certain categories and classifications are eligible to apply for an employment authorization document (EAD) and a Social Security Number (SSN) using a single form.

The updated Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization, aims to streamline the work authorization process. Applicants formerly needed to submit a Form 1-765 to USCIS for an EAD, and then submit additional paperwork in-person at their local Social Security office to obtain an SSN.

Beginning immediately, USCIS will transmit the additional data collected by the updated Form I-765 directly to SSA for processing. Individuals who receive their approved EADs from USCIS should receive their Social Security card from SSA within two weeks of the EAD approval.

Beginning on December 4, 2017, USCIS will only accept the 7/17/17 edition of Form I-765.
